Round 1 choice filling is open from July 20 to 22 for ranks 1 to 37,976 (aggregate cutoff 171.33 and above). Allotment results follow on July 24–26. Three days sounds like enough time — it isn’t, if you start from scratch on day one. Here is a simple plan.
Day 1 (July 20): Research, don’t fill yet
- Shortlist every college-branch combination you would genuinely join. Aim for a long list of 120–150 options before trimming.
- Check multi-year cutoff trends, not just last year. Single-year numbers mislead badly: Dhaanish Ahmed’s CSE-AIML jumped from 102 to 166.5 between 2024 and 2025, while Trichy Engineering College Civil fell from 158.5 to 102. One year of data would have sent you the wrong way in both cases.
- Searching by district? Know the quirk: most Chennai-area colleges are actually listed under Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur districts, not “Chennai”.
Day 2 (July 21): Order and enter your list
- Split your shortlist into three bands and order them reach → target → safe:
- Reach — colleges that closed 5–15 marks above your cutoff. TNEA allots the highest choice you qualify for, so ambitious choices at the top cost you nothing.
- Target — colleges that closed within about ±5 marks of your cutoff across recent years. This is where you will most likely land.
- Safe — colleges that consistently closed 10–20+ marks below you. These are your insurance.
- Fill all 100 choices if you can. There is no penalty for a long list, but a short list can leave you unallotted even when seats you’d have accepted existed.
Day 3 (July 22): Review and lock
- Re-read the list top to bottom and ask of each choice: “If I’m allotted this, will I join?” If no, delete or demote it.
- Check the ordering within bands — your genuine preference should decide ties, not habit.
- Save and confirm well before the deadline. Don’t gamble on last-hour server load.
Mistakes to avoid
- Filling only 15–20 “famous” choices — the classic way to end up with nothing in Round 1.
- Ranking by last year’s cutoff alone (see the volatility examples above).
- Putting safe choices first — you’ll be allotted them even if a better college was reachable.
- Listing colleges you’d never actually join “just to fill space” at the top of the list.
