Why trends matter more than last year’s number
Most students band their choice list using a single year of cutoffs. That can go badly wrong, because cutoffs swing — a lot. Real examples from the data (OC closing cutoffs, 2023 → 2025):
Rising fast (harder than they look):
- Tittagudi Sengunthar — EEE: 89 → 171 (+82)
- Dhaanish Ahmed CoE — EEE: 95 → 164.5 (+69.5)
- UCE Pattukkottai — Civil: 82.5 → 151.5 (+69)
- Velammal IT — Mechanical: 93.5 → 156.5 (+63)
Falling fast (opportunities others will miss):
- Sri Muthukumaran IT — Civil: 172 → 102.5 (−69.5)
- Madha Engineering — CSE: 178.3 → 128 (−50.3)
- Narayanaguru CoE — AI&DS: 142 → 85.5 (−56.5)
- Vins Christian CoE — ECE: 156 → 106 (−50)
A branch that moved 50+ marks in two years is not a “safe” or a “reach” based on one number — it’s a volatile pick, and you should place it a band more conservative than its best year suggests. Each college page flags these movements automatically: ▲ rising means it’s getting harder; ▼ falling means opportunity.
