How hot are the AI branches? TNEA 2025 cutoffs for AI&DS, AI-ML and Cyber Security

If you are filling choices for TNEA 2026, you have probably wondered: should I pick Computer Science, or one of the new AI branches? We crunched the official TNEA 2025 allotment data to see how the AI-era branches actually closed.

The big picture: AI&DS is now everywhere

Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (branch code AD) was offered by 331 college-branch combinations in 2025 — second only to CSE itself (405), and ahead of old workhorses like Mechanical (352 is close, but falling) and IT (292).

Branch Code Offerings (2025) Avg OC cutoff Highest OC cutoff
Computer Science and Engineering CS 405 147.5 200.00 (Anna Univ CEG)
Artificial Intelligence & Data Science AD 331 145.4 196.00
Information Technology IT 292 144.8 198.00
CSE (AI and Machine Learning) AM 129 144.8 196.00
CSE (Cyber Security) SC 132 145.4 194.00
CS and Business Systems CB 69 148.8 194.00
Electronics & Communication EC 392 142.4 199.50
Mechanical ME 352 126.7 196.50
Civil CE 223 130.0 195.50

What this means for your choice list

  • AI&DS cutoffs track CSE closely (avg 145.4 vs 147.5). In most colleges, the AI&DS closing cutoff was within a couple of marks of CSE — it is no longer the “easier backdoor into computing” it was in 2021–22.
  • The premium is in the college, not the branch name. Top-college CSE still closes at 199–200, while the same AI branches in mid-tier colleges close in the 140s. A strong college with AD/AM often beats a weak college with CS.
  • Self-supporting (SS) computing seats are scarce and hot — IT (SS) and CSE (SS) had only ~5 offerings each, closing near 198–199 on average.
  • Classic ECE remains the #2 by availability (392 offerings) and its top-end (199.5 at CEG/PSG) rivals CSE.

Try it yourself: enter your cutoff and community in the TNEAhelp College-Finder (TNEA 2026 edition, based on 2025 data) and filter branch codes CS, AD, AM, SC, CB to compare — then share the result with your parents on WhatsApp straight from the results page.
